Heir?

Hello! Welcome to Heir to the Thought. Usually referred to simply as Heir, I use this Substack to write about a variety of subjects near and dear to me, subjects which, broadly speaking, orient towards the idea of digital humanism — ways of thinking and paths to action for the individual who wishes to live humanely within a deeply technologised age. If you wish to live in the full flower of your humanity without rejecting the bounties of tech in which we are, for better and worse, trapped, then you may find things here that are of use to you.

Why subscribe?

With a free subscription, you’ll never miss an update from Heir. Just under half of my output is available to all subscribers. In the hope of helping you draw plenty of value out of this blog even when pieces are paywalled (and in the parallel hope of enticing you to pony up for the Heir), I almost always leave fairly large portions of paid articles open to all readers. Enjoy the previews!

Paid subscribers get the full package of the letter and website. That means:

  • Access to every article in full

  • Unlimited access to the archive (which contains those initially free pieces that otherwise slip behind the paywall a few weeks after first-publishing)

  • Comment privileges all over the place

And if you’re feeling really saucy, you can become a Founding Member. All prior privileges apply, plus you’ll have the not inconsiderable liberty of getting to commission an article from me once per year on a subject of your choice.

The Heir Society

The community attached to this Substack is small but thriving and, I’m very proud to say, profoundly committed. Fine conversation tends to spring up underneath most of what we publish and I aim always to respond to every comment readers are gracious enough to leave on my work.

While a great many thinkers of our time, high-profile and obscure, have committed themselves with great interest to the question “How do we remain human in our highly dehumanising world?”, Heir to the Thought is perhaps the only one which essays that question systematically.

If this sounds like something worthwhile to you, please come on in — join the subscriber’s list, support the blog, have your say.
